mk3 1.4 engine mod questions?
« on: 27 February 2009, 01:05 »
hi everyone im new here and just got a mk 3 1.4 golf, anyway when im on the motorway etc doing 70 im doing somewhere between 4 and 5000 rpm and is rather noisy aswell as rinsing my petrol... any way to get this a bit lower besides form travelling sub 50  would it maybe be possible to fit a gearbox from a mk3 gti as it has 5 gears and not 4.

second question is any way to get any more power out of the engine, got 400 pounds (ish) to play with this month as it is a pain when it comes to overtaking etc as it takes time to pick up speed.

thanks for any comments and help and sorry if its another ameture question  fairly new to this car malarke.

hate to say this but theres not much thats going to inprove.   the mk3 gti wasent exactly quick ether,  it's a heavy car and not exactly the most powerfull enigne. tbh there isn't really much point trying to tune the 1.4  pony for pound it just make you cry.  enjoy it for what it is  there not the slowest cars and quite reliable and not the worst on petrol to they do dislike motorway compared to bigger enignes
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

it'll do 70 mph all day just fine

it's one of the small engine trade offs tho, big motors will power you down motorwayy at 80 without thinking about it and use bugger all fuel.  shed  used to get 40 - 47 mpg on motorwaynwith a 2.5 v6  because they can make lot of torqe at low rpm that just isn't possible with a small engine so they can pull against very high gears.  it's all brilliant while mile munching but in town you cant exactly use the power and that big motor has to keeep itself spinning whitch is where littel motors come in round town my v6 would be sub 20 mpg and getting stuck in traffic was depressing.  so it all evens out in the end

all the VW's have gone bar 1.

to answer the 1st question 1.4 block is different shape to bigger blocks so a GTI box wont fit im afraid, you need a MK2/3 Golf 1.0-1.4 or MK2/3 Polo 1.0-1.3 5 speed box.

I didnt even know you could get a 4 speed box in a MK3, looking at ETKA I cant see any hint of different box mount brackets for the 4 speed so it should drop right in?

they do exist, eraly 1.4's  same box as mk2 1300 more or less so think an 085 box would fit if asked to

any 085 5 speed will fit stright in (any from a mk3 ABD engine) and all have a 0.740 5th ratio (unlike your current
0.813) so the revs will drop nicely on the motorway
oh and vw made an 084 4 speed mk3 until 96  :nerd:

wen i fitted my powerflow catback, i did notice it was a bit quicker, but still slow!

wait for insurance on a gti to go down. is it your first year of driving? cause after a year, your insurance for a mk3 gti 8v/16v and mk2 gti 8v will be around £1500 i think. at least it was for me.

LL ;)

Mine is the earliest year and has 5-speed.

If you want to keep it, get a 1.4 5 speed box, drop it in. Can't tell you what RPM is at 70 though. LL, what is it?
