GT TDI models?
« on: 26 February 2009, 16:49 »
Right, i'm the happy owner of a MK2 GTI, but need to expand the VW fleet as I don't want to put too many miles on the MK2 this year.

Really want a MK4 GT TDI, but curious about how to recognise a "real" one and what options were available.
I saw one for sale just down the road from me last night, seemed in good condition on the outside but no indication of which engine or age. It was dark and I can't remember the badge or what colour the "I" was or if it was a red "DI", the add in the window said GT TDI though.
Am I right in thinking that if it is a red "I" it's a 110/115 model, red "DI" 130, and red "TDI or GTI" 150?

The number plate was only 6 digits and began with "X" although this could be a private plate. It was up for £4,400 ono, which makes me think it wasn't an X plate, unless it was v low mileage? (which was no mention of)
It was also listed as having black leather heated Recaros, were these only available in certain models or were they optional extras throughout the GT TDI's?

Badges don't mean anything TBH mate as people could hav changed them or even misbadged at the dealers when first sold. Try putting the reg into an insurance companies website ;) Heated recaros are an option and very disirable.

Yeah just looked at another thread about how it was up to the dealers on the 150s.
Were heated recaros available for the earliest MK4's (98+) or was it a later option?

Gonna try and track it down later and get some more info on it.

Sorry about all the questions, I know bugger all about MK4's, I could talk all day and night about MK2's though lol.

That doesn't always work mine 150 comes up as a 130 on some insurance websites. Best way is to check the sticker in the boot is it not ?

I don't have heated recaro's in mine

the only way to tell for sure is from the engine code, there is a sticker in the boot under the boot liner, in the hand book and on the engine.

you could probably find out from VW if you had the vin number or reg

I only suggested doing that because he can't get into the car as he hasn't viewed it properly!

the insurance site's aren't always a good way to tell as the GT-TDi 130 and 150 come under the same section,

no difference in insurance which is a killer finding out you can have an extra 20bhp for nothing extra on insurance,

Cheers for all the responses guys.
I missed out on the car in the end, but I have another in mind.

It's an S reg GT TDI 110bhp apparently, 117k full VW main dealer SH.
5 dr in silver, very good inside and out, with A/C and sunroof + rear headrests.
It is up for £2489, but as I said before, I know little about the MKIV.

Can anyone point out any of the known problem areas? What is the common mileage for turbos to go on these, and are there any engine or ecu problems with this model I should be aware of?

Any help is appreciated
Cheers
