Brake discs, pads and lines
« on: 24 February 2009, 22:22 »
I'm after all new discs, pads and lines; but not sure what to get.

Was looking at all Black Diamond stuff. seem like a decent brand and got some good reviews. anyone used there stuff?

Not sure whether to get the full whack, as in drilled, vented, grooved. Or just go with the simple solid discs from gsf or alike.

looking at £150 for the g60 fronts, and £120 for the mk2 gti rears. but the gsf ones would save me over £100 i reckon, mayb more!

think the brake lines are worth the £60 or wateva.

Let me know what you think peeps, hopefully get these ordered soon, so i can brakes on before engine goes in.

Cheers :)

I have drilled vented brembo discs and green stuff pads up front from gsf, 288mm and they stop very well.

On the rear i have the cheapest solid discs and cheapo pads from gsf, as it really dont matter.

And i can stop in the flash of an eye.

Think rear discs, pads, and bearings cost me about £80, and the front discs and pads cost me about the same, maybe a tad more.

Cheers KG :afro:

just thinking it might be worth the extra dollar to get that bit extra power, seeing as i will have more power than what a usual mk3 golf has. a lot of peeps see brakes as on of the most important things, so i figured it might be money well spent.

Braided brake lines are supposed to not bulge and be better for heavy braking. Not sure if i believe that bull crap, probably only more effective when your abs is working with it.

I would suggest uprated fronts as i said, and then just standard discs at the rear. Combine these with GOOD tyres and you wont have a problem. Just dont drive like a fool, haha

You could go down the route of the porsche 312mm brake set up. They are 4pot rather than 1. So you will get incredible braking. You can get the calipers and carriers for the front for about £50-£100. But you would need to have at least 16inch wheels. Not sure what hubs you would need either. Maybe conversion to 5x100.

Without abs you may lock up a lot though....

not going to go to 312mm, but still want good braking (well you know, within reason). so uprated discs, pads and lines should give me enough.

yeah, no abs, so could be locking up a bit. :undecided: :(

Are you going to keep rear drums, and just uprate the standard size discs on ur mk3?

Or are you going to fit 5x100 gti hubs, and get rear discs working?

I have got drilled front discs and mintex extreme pads on the front, and drilled discs on the rear with standard mintex pads. Braided brake lines all round.
The braided lines will stop bulging that can occur in normal rubber lines, nd will also give a better feel to the brake pedal.

The Mintex extreme pads are really good and work well from cold, and also continue to work well on the track when the paint is bubbling on my wheels from heat. Unfortunately no longer available

I used drilled discs to try and help heat build up on the track and I could get a full front and rear set from the states really cheap with no delivery costs.

When these need replacing I will probably go back to OEM discs.

If you are just using the car on the road I would stick to OEM discs of a suitable size for the engine you are putting in and either OEM or uprated pads, rears I would leave as standard.

The choice is yours on uprated pads, plenty out there and everyone will have their own preferances.
