i sold my mk3 to buy a mk1 cab which i did  wife thought i was crackers couldnt understand why i would sell a perfectly good modern much cherished car that even she liked driving to replace it with an old ugly box shaped 80s car that didnt even have power steering (her words not mine). i loved that car fixed all the little niggles on it cleaned it up inside and out.  i got so much pleasure from driving it more than my mk3 could ever give me. me and the kids loved it the wife hated it refused to drive it ,steering to heavy ,its ugly, embarrasing, she would even move it off the drive if it was parked behind her car rather than use it even though she would only be nipping out. after an 8 month love affair we parted company (the car not the wife)after someone at work offerd me good money for it and with the wife refusing to drive it it was time to let it go  my next car was to be a mk2 gti (with power bloody steering) but after waiting for one to come along i ended up with a 306 diesel that was 14 months ago and here i am trawling through the for sale sections again is it dajavou.   i think its an illness you sell a perfectly good reliable modern car .....well you all know the rest ............IM AFFECTED

despite mine being currently off the road (this time CONDEMNED as the front coil spring snapped, i love roundabouts), and the mrs using that as an excuse to moan about getting a newer and more comfortable car, it wont be sold for some time yet

love it, although its a bit too noisy for long journeys.

was considering buying the boss's 99 TT quattro for cheap but OH the shame!  :embarassed:

I don't think a semi will give the same results

Im 32 now, and I've always had a company car since starting work, about 10 in all ranging from sh!te Vectra's to OK Honda Accord 2.2 diesel ex with all the toys to good Mk5 Gt TDi 140.  Then  I started my own business so I could choose anything.  I chose a 91 J reg Mk2 Valver, Beacuse It's so much fun.

Also, Since owning it I've seen only 3 other Mk2, and 2 Mk1 Cabbys.  All the drivers have looked and given a knowing nod and a thumbs up as we pass each other.  What do we know that others do not, eh

And as a recent example I pulled into Halfrauds car park in Neath and a chap in his mid 20's walked past and he couldn't stop himself from looking over his sholder as he went by and nodding.  Similar thing happened in Tesco's petrol station. Group of teenagers in the back of a Corsa were drooling as they gawped at my valver.

I agree with everything said above. All new cars look the same, the feel the same, but the Golf is different.

Plus it's a lot easier to pick out in a car park

I get it lots..... Mind you, I dont use te G60 all that often, but when I do, I get ''pepper'' from my friends.... Actually, my girlfriend loves the G60, and she prefers it to my daily driver, the X5 4,8is, but I think this is because its smaller and easier to park...

... why don't you just buy a new car?

I swear, everyone I know, whenever we talk about cars, always ask me - why don't you just get a new one? Its driving me mad (pun not completely intended ).

I don't think people understand that even if I had a new car - I'd still take it apart every week

I get this a LOT! I had an '03 Lotus Elise before my mk2 Gti and I still took that apart and did all my own servicing... You either get it or you don't. I'm lucky though: my GF doesn't get it, but she still lets me play 'cos she knows I'm (almost) never happier than when I'm in the garage
