Colour Coded
« on: 18 February 2009, 13:58 »
Iv just spoken to a body shop which my local dealer gave me the number of. Its with regards to getting my GTI bumpers colour coded like on an ED30, he basically said I would need to buy new side skirts and rear valance as the ones that are on my car at the moment are textured so the paint wont stick to them very well and he wont be able to guarantee his work. He quoted me roughly £530 + VAT (paint and labour) to colour code them if I supplied him with new side and rear bits from VW.

So all in all its going to cost a fooking fortune, who has had their standard GTI colour coded and how did you go about it? I knew it wasnt going to be that cheap but didnt expect it to be that expensive.

That is a shocking quote. I pay £100 a pannel (if it is just being sprayed) at my body shop, they do take ages tho but the work is well worth the wait.

And so what if they are textured they just need to be rubbed down, before starting to paint.

Just seen your from Croydon. Speak to Reuben's at http://www.tuningwerkes.com/ He will put you in touch of a good body shop in your area that you could get another quote from.

I thought some bodyshop's had a type of paint that would go over the original textured bumper? I'm sure there was one in Maidenhead that did it.

yeah whitegti pointed me in the direction of that vw approved bodyshop - nice people, good price and *touch wood* nearly a year after getting it done i have had absolutely no issues with it.
i know whitegti had an issue where they couldn't remove the side skirts in order to fully wet-prime them so their first attempt had some flaking but i'm pretty sure they sorted that since. Mine worked first time as they got the skirts off no problem and providing i keep it clear of a jet wash i am confident it will last for years  :)

dunno where you are based but the place i went to was parkford coachworks in maindenhead

this has come up before and I believe the R32 skirts and valence are smooth, hence better to paint.  but people do paint the GTI ones, depends how good a job they can do.
I think TT has his original GTI ones painted and they peeled, but could be wrong?

hmmmm,

from those pics the wet priming achieves a good finish and for 500 sheets +VAT you cant go wrong!
