have you tryed giveing it a pry with a screwdriver ?
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

yeah i gave it a quick go with no sign of it budging.

it just turns and doesnt get any looser. this should be do able without removing the alternator belt shouldnt it? the case is sort of pushing against it, but i cant see how that would stop the thread unwinding.

I think this bolt may stay in the belt cover when undone, due to the rubber bung?  Its been a while since I took off one o them metal covers.  but once that bolt is undone and the 2 nuts are off, the belt cover should come right off.  It will fight you though as its a tight fit!

i think the alternator belt is preventing me from pulling the plug out of whatever it screws into, meaning i cant lift the cover up
