timing belt cover

do i need to remove the timing belt cover to get my rocker cover off?
I can only see three bolts, two that are shared with the rocker cover and one at the front of the cover, low down, by what i think is the alternator belt?

or is it possible to prise it off, without un doing it? dont want to snap anything.

halfway through this job. help would be great.

haha sorry. 1.8 gti 1984 8v

I have just noticed the cover is in two parts.

If i undo the large allen key, in the the upper cover, is the danger it will mess about with the tensioner?

you may have to unbolt the cam belt cover  if the rocker cover is bolted ontop of it,   undoing allen head  on upper cover won't affect the timeing belt or it's tensioner

ok, removed the rocker cover bolts, and a rubber plug next to allen key in upper part of the timing cover.

however, the large allen key keeps turning to a point and then doesnt get any loser?

i am sure it must have something to do with the rubber plug i removed?

haynes mentions retaining clips? where abouts are these?

i suspect you have just loosened your timing belt tensioner !!!!

oops

think the upper timing belt cover just un clips off

i would take this off check the timing belt is tight before you start it !!!!!!

other wise it will slip and damage the engine

FFS! thats what i didnt want to do!

I have tightened it right back up. should that be ok?

It doesnt seem to budge, until that was loosened.

got some pics to clarify stuff

these bolts in red, are undone. but the cover wont budge.



haynes and bently say remove the rubber plug to get to allen key and "retaining clips" shown here



I have removed the rubber plug covering the clips but have no idea how to undo them as i cant see into them due to the angle.

circled here is what i un did and did up again. the arrow points to the clips.



Really dont want to take this to a garage for such a simple job.

how does it unclip?

tensioner is held on with a nut and it's behind the cover
