oil mayonaise !

oil warning came on, so checked dipstick bit low, however i decided to open the filler cap for some unknown reason and found a layer of yellow gunk  :sick: all round the underside of the cap and in the lip of the metal rim, is this normal ?, ? this means water/moisture is mixing with the oil, ? should I be worried or is it a call to the dealers? cars only 2 years old ..22k

Hi matey iv had it exactly the same on mine 06 plate 35k only had car a couple weeks :cry:  doesnt seem to have affected it at all tho, and oil/water isnt dropping either and car isnt smoking or anything like that, i rekon it could just be moisture maybe (i hope) and mine was sat on the vw forecourt for a while aswell so dont think that would have helped, ive wiped it all away etc and going to check it tommorrow to see if its returned :angry: think il just keep an eye on it and see how it goes as i have a 13 month vw warranty anyway so not to worried have you still got warranty ??? hope so, MATT

condensation forming on the inside of the cap is not unusual in cold weather, so you are ok I think

if you have been doing loads of short stop start journeys then i would clean it off an monitor. engine wont get to full temp, and as said previously, condensation forms hence the mayo.  :wink:

if however you have done LONG journeys then worry  :shocked:

Its quite common for short journeys. Its if you have lots you should be worried, a small amount is normal.

ahh thats good to hear as the amount in mine is very minimal and as you say i do, do loads of short journeys couple miles here a couple miles there etc, as mad as it sounds i wish i worked further from my house as its only 3 mile journey and car hardly gets warmed up which is not good  :sad:

i wish i could afford an R lol just got the regular 3 door 2006 gti very happy with it though part exd my 2003 civic type r for it best thing i ever did as the gti makes type r feel like a bag of sh!te quality wise anyway  :smiley:

Totally normal during short journeys and very cold weather.  Large amounts of condensation are produced at start up, this forms in the engine, then into the exhaust system, hence way it used to be very common for back boxes to rot through fast and made of cheapo steel, as they are the coldest part of the system. This is helped nowadays due to the fast warmup of the engine, due to emissions control requirements. The goo is a mixture of oil and water droplets.

If you are suffering no loss of coolant, no problems, but obviously your engine oil has to work harder with all this condensation. So if your driving is continually short journeys, then more frequent oil changes are advisable.

OK thats the laymans view,  now where is TT with the in depth analysis?..........he's out there somewhere    :wink:
