Aftermarket Brake Pads........

Hi Guys

Just want some advice before I take the plunge  - I need some new front brake pads cos apparently my OEM ones are 80% shot! - I am getting a remap soon too so want the extra stopping power. I am keeping the OEM discs for now and only want to upgrade the pads.

What are your opinions on a good Fast Road pad thats works well with the OEM Discs!  Guy who is doing the remap (Revo btw) recommended yellowstuff pad!  Any good?      Cheers

Yes yellowstuff are very good pads. It's like they finally managed to take all the good points of redstuff and greenstuff and end up with the best of both worlds.. great friction from cold but also when hot and no major increase in brake dust residue.

I should probably mention.. technically they count as a performance modification and you should inform your insurance company.

cheers topher  - are they much better than the greenstuff pads then as someone is selling a set of front greenstuff pads quite cheaply on ebay - or should i just pay the extra for the yellowstuff?

as for insurance  - no probs have gotta renew in the next few weeks - thinking of HIC or Greenlight - but will inform them

I had yellow stuff pads on my previous motor (Skyline R33) and was extremely impressed with the stopping power. They are EBC's highest frictional rating pad, only one draw back was the amount of dust they kicked up onto the alloys. I found myself cleaning the alloys every weekend. But I suppose depends on how much of a clean freak you are.

They seemed to last a reasnoble time, even went with the motor when I sold it.

Don't forget also that changing to a higher fricton pad will mean you are more likely to go through discs quicker, but all depends on what the car is used for and what kind of driver you are etc etc.

On a road car, the only real advantage of yellow over green is they may last a while longer and be a touch kinder to your discs. You'd really need to be driving like a cnut to actually need the benefits the yellows give at higher temperatures. Take a look at the image below



Redstuff were always known as the better stoppers (until yellows came out!) but weren't great from cold. The greens will do you fine unless you think you might want to put your car around a track at some point (even then the greens will do, but yellows will be better!)

Surely it wouldnt increase your insurance premium? I told Adrian flux about the change of calipers and discs on the old motor and they explained that it wouldnt affect the premium whatsoever.

Topher do they do a diagram for dust residue? Would be interesting to see that.

It's not just operating temperature though, that just illustrates when they begin to produce brake fade. Which like Topher says is only really relevant for track based work.

The frictional rating is something to look out for.

might save myself some reddies then and buy the greenstuff pads - as they will only be used for the occasional !!  spirited road use - i have no plans for any track days!

Some insurance companies are iffy about it - increased braking performance = more chance of an uninsured careless driver hitting the back of you. Ridiculous but in this day and age they'll look for any excuse to get out of paying a claim, so it's best to let them know even if it won't affect the premium.

There was a graph I saw for brake dust but can't find it now. Greenstuff was the best obviously, redstuff the worst with yellows coming smack bang in the middle.
