New owner with the usual questions!!
« on: 02 February 2009, 22:06 »
Hi all,

Im based north of Aberdeen - lots of quiet, wide open sweeping roads

Just got myself a standard GTi Mk5 5 door in black.
Traded in my BMW 120D M Sport, so getting used to 25mpg and FWD is taking a minute!!

Absolutely love the GTI, is so refined but quick and a lot easier to live with than the BMW.

A few questions -

1. VAG-COM - there are some units on EBAY. Will any of these work on the Mk5?

2. Wheres the best place to get a centre armrest and some genuine Monza's (mines on 17s).

3. I have the single CD - is it worth upgrading to the 6 cd - apart from the obvious, are there any amp/wattage/sound quality differences?

3. Finally, what options do I have for replacing the rear bumper for an Ed30 one? Ive looked at breakers etc, but they are none existant!!

Thanks in advance for any replies, I look forward to becoming an active member of the forum!

Regards

Andy

1.) Make sure you don't go for any VAG Com stuff that comes from the East. All fake copies that probably won't even work. I'm sure a VAG COM expert will come along soon. http://www.ross-tech.com/ is the official place for VAGCOM I think.

2.) Centre armrest and Monza's come up on eBay from time to time. Your other bet is to just keep an eye on the golf forums! People often sell them for aftermarket wheels.

3.) Can't answer

4.) Dealer/eBay/forums are your best bet!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Firstly welcome to the forum.  Get yourself across to www.eastsidevw.co.uk forum based in Aberdeen

1.  Quite a few guys on Eastside will help you out

2.  Ebay, forums, breakers, dealers

3.  I only had a single CD in mine but now fitted a ipod cable, so thats an option

4.  Ebay, forums, breakers, dealers.  Although some guys on here have had their original lower bumper painted

1. VAG-COM - there are some units on EBAY. Will any of these work on the Mk5?

Avoid ebay. Look on the local forums for group buys which come along every so often or in the for sale sections. VAGCOM is now also known as VCDS.

2. Wheres the best place to get a centre armrest and some genuine Monza's (mines on 17s).

Again, look on the for sale section of forums.

3. I have the single CD - is it worth upgrading to the 6 cd - apart from the obvious, are there any amp/wattage/sound quality differences?

Don't upgrade to the 6CD and I wouldn't really bother with an IPOD link (I had it and it is pants). Most VW head units have low sound handling capabilities and the speakers are realatively poor quality too. It all depends on your budget, but if you value quality sound, then aftermarket is really the only way to go. A decent double din head unit and 3 way components up front, with coax speakers in the rear and a sub and 4 way amp in the boot is the best option.

3. Finally, what options do I have for replacing the rear bumper for an Ed30 one? Ive looked at breakers etc, but they are none existant!!

I'd go with prepping and painting the original one, as the Edition 30 bumper is quite pricey for a piece of plastic.

Thanks in advance for any replies, I look forward to becoming an active member of the forum!

Cheers all

It seems that VAG-COM on Ebay is a none starter!

The 6cd makes no difference to sound quality

The rear bumper needs paint!

I will just have to keep my eyes open for 18"s and an armrest!

Glad to see a few locals on the forum - Im actually in Peterhead!

Thanks for the help, look forward to future topics!!!

Painting the rear bumper isn't as easy as it sounds - i phoned around a few of my local dealers and they all said that because of its bobbly texture the paint won't stick - i was pointed to a localish vw approved bodyshop by this forum which did a "special" wet-priming technique
