Mk2 smoking as it warms up
« on: 27 January 2009, 20:13 »
Hi my 1990 8v digifant golf gfi has developed a smoking habit my partner red lined it to 80mph in 3rd the car felt like it lost power and puffed out smoke for a few seconds I changed the complete dizzy assembly, cap, plugs, leads because it had trouble starting, now the car runs fine but is smoking whitish smoke smells exausty, no loss of any fluids it's not too bad when cold but gets worse when warming up. Any ideas or advice

the loss of power was the rev limuter cutting in hitting it occasionaly won't do any damage.   it just sounds awfull, can't rember how the digifant works but they normaly  cut the fuel or take the ignition advance off think digi take the ignition advance off. that stops the engine produceing power  and sounds awfull if that made it breack it was going to do it anyway.   all of my old 8 valves saw the limiter meany times and never broke
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Red lining it is no problem IMO either, so long as its not a habit!!

Compression test time though for you, as it might be shot rings etc. if its smoking until warm.

If the smoke is white, it may be steam, check the oil filler cap and dipstick for a mayonaise type appearance.
If you have this you may have a problem with the oil cooler or the head gasket.

Thanks guys there is no Mayo in the oil at all I don't seem to be losing any coolant and it's not using oil I took it out for a bit of a blast I think it gets a little better after a drive but this morning it was back to smoking again  I compression tested it number 1 cylinder was 8.5 bar whilst 234 were at 9 bar with the engine cold. So anyother suggestions great fully recieved

.5 bar between clys is no issue

but 8.5  / 9 bar is a bit on the low side but enough
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
