Unplugging the maf seemed to work as a temporary fix for me, must vary engine to engine. If you can dig out the pics of gaz's engine rebuild you'll see there's no coil packs, never could work out why they didn't use them.. probably vw being cheapskates.

I don't know mate, i'm not experienced with mk4 golfs.
Maybe vw didn't use the coil packs cos they were having so many problems with them at the time.
The best way to solve the chap's problem is for him to buy a bentley manual for the mk4.
I got tests for MAF and all the other stuff for mk3, but as toph says it may be different for mk4's.

Hi guys

tried disconnecting the MAF earlier today and not much different.  At low revs a difference was apparaent though, with car struggling to pull away from still, and requiring much more revs than norm.  Going through the gears, pretty much same as when MAF connected, ie kangarooing and hesitation before pick-up after pedalling down.

With no MAF and being only slighly worse, i reckon MAFs near gubbed and disconnnecting it should have had a much worse affect had it been good.

VW for a tophuh recommended ?75 exchange tommorows me thinks.

My car had exactly the same problem - replaced the MAF, it now runs fine.
