Mk2 8v gti cutting out

Hi, i have recently bought a mk2 8v gti and i've already started having problems with it. it keeps randomly cutting out while driving, the engine loses all power and cuts out......after leaving the car for 5-10 mins it will re-start and drive fine, the engine when working runs fine and pulls nicely it just keeps cutting out! i've done a full service on it, thinking it might resolve the problem, but the it's still happening.

anyone experienced the same problem? any help is greatly appreciated!!

is your fuel pump pretty loud?  do you hear it run for a few seconds after the car cuts out?

to be honest i havnt ever noticed it. would it be a loud sound...as in would it be noticable? thanks

if you can hear it over the sound of the engine when youre standing next to the car then summat is up, once you're inside you should just be able to hear the hum of the in-tank fuel pump over the engine unless you have a loud/shafted zaust.
Next time it cuts out keep your ears open for the sound of the fuel pump, you should hear it run for about 2 seconds if the cut out is ignition related.  If you dont hear it then its probably the pump(s) that have cut out for some reason.  If you turn the key 1 click you should hear the fuel pump prime for a couple of seconds, that gives you an idea of the sound you're listening for

Ive got the same problem on my 8v my fuel pumps screaming like a b!tch. and it likes to fall asleep at low speed sometimes. Ive been meaning to do it for a while now but im having a crack at it tomorrow. Im told its the lift pump which is in the tank. Therse a black round disc srewed itnto the boot underneth the carpet.

Undo the srews, disscont both pipes 'make sure you've got new hose clips,.

diconnect the plug and then you'll need a big hammer and a blunt wedge of wood or a blunt chizel and try and beat the plastic srew on coller around untill its loose enought to undo by hand. 'be careful dont go nuts'...

 pull the pump out, its the big silver bit 'cant miss it'  thats the little fooker causeing the greif.......

caution...strickly no sparks, no smoking, any where near the car when the fuel pump is out as this expose's the the fuel tank. And i suggest do is when the fuel tank is low on fuel....

my nut was so stuck I ended up cutting it in half, new one isnt spensive from VW though.  Main trouble is space is so tight thru the hole, its a bit of a nightmare!

i have a problem with my 8v pb... cuts out when coming up to junctions etc. i can hear the fuel pump over the sound of my engine, including the loud exhaust! when it cuts out i cannot hear the pump. i've checked for air leaks etc, ignition timing is correct.does this mean my pump is fooked?

could be the lift pump in the tank. pull the plug off the pump under the car and turn the key 1 click. if you dont hear the in-tank pump prime then theres your problem

thanks, just tried that but can still hear the pump prime
