rear calipers - repair/mk3/mk4 replacements?
« on: 16 June 2004, 14:27 »
I am not exactly spanner-clever so can I have some input on this:

Then rear calipers on my Rallye are fooked. I know this has always been a mk2 weakness. AmD recommend new ones. This happened on another mk2 I had and I just got new mk2 ones for that in the end.

I know that you can use mk3 rear calipers as replacement instead, straight swap I believe. I guess the idea being that they are more reliable. I also see that C+R are now listing mk4 rear calipers as a swap but need some different brake hoses.

Anyone have any experience on this kind of swap? Are the mk4 ones worth it? Alternatively, can my calipers be repaired? The handbrake only just about works at the moment so I think this needs attention!

Cheers,

jv

Personally if you are planning on keeping the car I wouldn't bother trying to fix the calipers, as they will seize on you in again in the future.

Mk3 (post 95 you want) are a straight swap and use the standard hoses.
Mk4 just need the replacement rear hose kit that Goodridge make, both C&R and TSR sell them, or you can order direct from Goodridge.

Both are anti-seize but the mk4 are alloy and so weigh less and won't rust.

Had this done to mine already matey - the only difference bewteen late MK3 and MK4 Calipers are MK4 ones are alloy and more expensive.

Ealier MK3 capliers are no better than the Mk2 ones too, so avoid them !!!

I got Mr 6 to do mine and he did a cracking job - brakes tend to be my bogey job  :P

Is the Rallye rear end not different then ???

Apparently the rear wheels are driven  :P otherwise I think the brakes are the same :)

hmm i might be sneaky soon then, if my wifey wants a new car she can trade my mk4 in, but not untill ive nicked the calipers of it!! (if mk4 fit mk2 then surely mk2 fit mk4???) even though i have brand spankers on me 16v maybe a worthwhile swap!! lol
