2. What would i need to do   ,just mot and road tax and insurance and thats it?

3. currently im on french insurance and insured by french insurance so im safe on the english roads and covered

4. is it worth keeping a lhd in the uk or just getting a rhd car.

If it's a French car and under current French insurance, you don't need to do anything as you will be covered for the minimum TPO cover under 4th EU Directive provided the insurance is still valid.

If you want to import it into this country, you will need to get the appropriate cover first of all (minimum TPO cover) and this will enable you to drive it to where you will keep it ONLY. Then you will need to get it registered as a UK vehicle. I am not sure how long this takes but it maybe a few days depending on what you need to do - I don't know the details - suggest you look at www.dvla.gov.uk for more info. I would imagine that once you receive your V5 document you will then need to get your car MOT'd (I doubt there'll be too much to do as LHD cars are no different bar the wheel being on the wrong side of the car for this country) & then taxed and you'll have to buy the appropriate number plates. In short it's a logistical nightmare. Buy an English car and sell this one in France if you can or break it in England and cancel your French insurance once you've done this. You will not be able to sell it as an English vehicle unless it is registered here. Also a foreign-registered vehicle cannot be insured under an English policy.

Provided you have the appropriate documents, the police should be fine and be able to send you on your way unless you've done something wrong. They have every right to check things out, but if you have a French certificate, it should have the appropriate wording in English on the back to confirm cover.

Fines can vary. They generally start at £60 but no insurance is likely to be much higher. Plus you'll get about 6 points on the English licence you don't have yet...

Hope this helps!
