Depends on how good you want them? I bought some Halfords ones, for ?30 or something? Can't remeber the number, i do know however that they are the same as an 89 Volvo 240, so if it fits a 240, it'll fit a golf. Its easier if you have a five door too. Incidentally in their little guide book on the shelf, it said "****" (numbers) then nexrt week it said "none" but they do still fit.

It might be 1040. Cant remeber for sure

Once you look at the bars, and the roof rubber it will become obvious (I hope)! If you look on the roof rubber with the door open, you see the valley running along the roof, the top sits in this, and theres like a fluffy bit below. The other bit sits in between these. Its an L shape of metal. You might worry about it being insecure, it isn't! If you go and look nw, hopefully my instructions will become clear!! One important thing is not to go too much over 50 as the strains put on it are quite unbelivable!

They were pretty hard for me too, about pricing etc... different prices in different stores. Still, i got it in the end.

Not into BMX i'm afraid, into "proper" bikes ;D . Which leads onto my next question, my bike is undoubtedly bigger than BMX, it fits IN the car easily... why dont you just bung it in the back?? I only got bars cos i take two, and canoes etc... And, you will (idealy) need a cycle carrier too, as its harder than you think to attach it, and it goes without saying, good quality straps, as you like your car, and dont want it to crash down on your roof  :o ! Hope you find a suitable arrangement.

p.s. If you want me too i will find out the code for you?

need to bung it some where as boot full of ice and my tent etc will be in there also, car will be full of beer/food etc no room for a bike!!, ill never buy one of them rear mount cycle carriers as a friend of mine got killed by one 6 years ago when it fell off the car in front (complete with 2 bikes), he was on his motorbike at the time.

im going to lincoln at the weekend so hopefully will sort one out there, send me the code for yours though matey, i need a 2 bar one really as im gonna make my own frame at work to fit to it to carry the bike!!

You do have to be very careful with mounting anythin to cars. People seem to forget its not really bolted on, and its not aerodynamic and causes HUGE stresses, seeing as its only attached at a small point, and not across the whole roof for instance.

I would hope yoou did use two bars, i can't even imagine how you could attach a bike to a single bar??!

Code is 1040 (so i was right ;D ). Bear in mind though thats a Halfords own make code, and i don't think its printed on the box, only on the end of the bars themselves. I would ask them to open the box first, and check, then ensure you can return it, jsut in case! It also can be a touch hard to get it all lined up the first time. Another Importnant thing is to put some of lubicant on the rubbers first, they'll prob be a bit weak.
