Lightening

Anybody know whether vw left any excess meat on the engine internals for the 1.6 and 1.8 gti lumps? I dont suppose the cranks need any work, but rods and flywheel could probably stand some lightening.

people normaly fit uprated conrods and pistons........

by the post i may have throught that you were doing this yourself ie engineering..... and may try to lighten the internals yourself........ witch would end up in the rods banging through the sump due to the design of them........ ie if you start filling the conrods you will weaken them........ you may know this but there are plenty who dont!

lightening and balancing is best left to engine builders........ ie the pros!

the only thing you can to is to fit uprated parts....
but unless other engine work is done ie cam and head work the bottom end will be pointless.......

Fair enough. I'm used to 1950's tech, where its so over engineered you can lop dirty great lumps off without critically weakening anything.

I'm learning the black art of engine building at the moment and have plenty of contacts for when machine tools are needed! Just trying to figure out how far I could go with a VW lump before having to spend serious money!
