had a similar problem a few months ago.

It was the the bit that sits on top of the motor that burned out. A few on ebay that are going cheap.

hope that helps :)

Does the solenoid click when you turn the ignition key?

If not and you're sure the solenoid is OK then it could be a poor connection or a problem in the wiring between ignition switch and solenoid.

You haven't got an immobiliser fitted have you? Could also be that.

cheers r and h

i'll check the wiring between the switch and solenoid tomorrow..

there was an immobiliser, but its been disconnected, i'll double check this..

I havn't got a multimeter, which doesn't help!! defo need to purchase one!

the AA geezer deffinately got 12volts across the motor when the ignition was turned, so we cannot understand why the replacement motor doesn't turn?

Could he have put the multimeter from possitive or earth on the motor to + or - on the battery - thus missing out a section of wiring? if you get what i
mean?

12v is permenantly supplied to the starter motor directly from the battery via a heavy duty cable. When you operate the ignition switch you supply 12V to the solenoid. Is this the voltage that you checked?

Check whether you are getting 12V to the solenoid when you operate the ignition switch........if you are then its a faulty solenoid, however I suspect you aren't getting 12V so its as I previously mentioned: ignition switch, immobilser or wiring between ignition switch and solenoid.

Ahh, see, I didn't check, the AA did - he wasn't proper AA, he was just a guy from a local garage who the AA contract out (cuz we live in the middle of nowhere) he possibly coulld of not checked it right.
All i know is that one lead from his multimeter was on the battery.

I'm thinking the simplest thing to do here, would be for me to get a multimeter and have another look..

but all of your help is greatly appreciated, and any more thought would be too... thanx..

 ;D

finally fixed it!

after checking everything, i finally followed a wire from the old immobiliser which led to a earth, this connection promtly fell off in my hand.  Connected it to the battery negative, turn the keys, brumm brummm !!! we have action..!

glad i found it, i was about to give up n take the car to a garage.
not sure they would have found it any quicker than i have...

cool, back to the brake bleed.... ;)
