MOT - Back box trouble. Help again!!!
« on: 13 December 2003, 15:26 »
Ok so just got me clutch sorted, everything else is good, take car for MOT and the bloke comes out and says there is no point as it will fail on the back box!!! Ahhhh!

I've got a custom stainless system with a Magnex back box. I still got the cat in there but the bloke rekons it will fail coz of the noise is uncharacteristic of a Golf!

My car is not as loud as a Scooby but because they have standard loud exhausts its ok!

What?

The Geezer said i should take my back box off and fit a standard one for the MOT. But i can't do this as the Magnex is welded on and the system is a much larger bore than standard anyway!

I told the geezer it passed fine last time but he said its all coz of new legislation.

What the feck do i do? Can't cut 400 quids worth of exhaust off!

Can anyone on ere do an MOT for me or know where i can go!? Sussex, Surrey area!

Thanx

Just goto ya local VW garage.

All MOT centres charge the same amount, and a VW garage "shouldnt" talk B$ to u

I am a MOT tester (well was up 'till last year when I changed my job) and as far as I am aware the reasons for rejection for a exhaust were: insecure, fouling body or axle etc, incomplete or leaking. Don't recal any mention of " noise is uncharacteristic of a Golf", or any other car.
I think that the man is talking bollo*?$.

The car can be rejected if the exhaust is excessively loud.

Ask him to show you in the MOT guidlines the db limit for a golf. Who is to say what is and isn't right for a golf to sound like. Total sh1te. Sounds like a dodgy garage m8

I thought MOTS where meant to deem if the car was  road safe, hence the loose, leaking exhaust mentioned abovmeaning it wasn safe?!,i didn really think noise came into it,unless u were 1 of these daft tw@ts who got a big bore!I think it comes down to excessive noise, which,in my experienex, magnex do not produce ehaust system, full or from cat back, which do produce too much noise-i mite b wrong?!

Have booked into a local garage on Wenesday. They seem reasonable on the phone, said they don't have a problem with modified exhaust systems aslong as cat in place. I explained it was nearly ?500 worth of custom steel and Magnex back box. Didn't say the other garage said it would fail it, just said i was makin sure they didn't have a problem with modified cars.

See what happens Wednesday. I'll keep ya posted.  :D

Appologies for posting this Topic in three boards (mk3, garage, chat). I was in a state of panik after all my clutch work and expence saturday morning, then being told i would fail an MOT unless i took a cutting tourch to my ?500 worth of exhaust which is my most treasured mod to date. I almost hit the bloke when he started coming out with all this carp.  >:(

All is good, passed no probs! ;D

Guy that owns the garage had a slightly modded mk3 VR6 sitting out front, he is well in to his VW's and we spent ages talking golfs. Think i had passed from then on, bit of the old secret hand shake!  ;)

I told him about the other garage and he said "what a load of bo!!ox" and complemented me on having a lovely car. We both agreed the other geezer had abit of the green eyed monster going on! Then he went on to tell me about how he co owns the golf restoration specialist up the road and his VR6 lost in a flat out race against one of there Mk1's. Anyway he went as far as to offering me a discount at the restoration place on any bodywork i may need in the future and when i said i was thinking about a re trim of the interior he offed me a great deal! Another good garage to add to the list. ;D

Just goes to show at christmas some things do work out well. My car is running better than ever at the moment! But still my work is not done, new brakes - disks and pads - all round in the early new year then some interior fun in the spring! Thats the plan!  :)

Nice one on getting through the MOT, should go back and point this out to the other garage!!

As for the Mk1 winning - read it and weep '6 ;D
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture
