mk2 gti rear disc brake caliper problems, doh
« on: 09 December 2003, 13:05 »
mk2 1985 gti 8v. rear calipers have been changed for ones that worked as the handbrake cable springs were seized on the old calipers.

now the car has been sitting for about 1 month since changing the calipers of which i havent had the time or chance to bleed the back brake calipers up as nobody would help me (cheers to all my mates, last time i change a turbo on a rover at 9pm on a saturday night).

handbrake springs and all that work fine on both sides, they are moving with the cable smoothly. problem is, rear passenger side brake appers to be stuck on. ive bled the fluid through and there wasnt any air in it at all. did 10 times on each side. the driverside is  a bit free-er (spelling?) and the disc turns by hand but not totally free spinning.

what is likely to have happend and how can i fix it? the car has got to go in for an mot tomorrow and im thinking might as well let them fix it, but id like to know of what i can do myself tonight.

Check the cables aren't too tight, try setting up the handbrake from scratch. Buy a pressure bleeder kit , its easy to do on your own.

ill check the cables yeah it does seem as if theyre working fine though but come to think of it they worked fine before me mate adjusted them up tighter, hmm.

pressure bleed kit is on my christmas wish list along with some 87mm low compression forged pistnons for my nova and a couple of vanilla magic trees as usual. they rock

ive losened the cables off at the handbrake but it made no difference really.

gonna try bleeding them again later. do bout 20 turns on each side then maybe see what the condition of the other calipers ive got is. do the handbrake springs seperate from the caliper? as i could make 2 good calipers from the 4 ive got ya see

how do you mean winding back of the caliper?

i dont really want to change em as i only changed em 4 weeks ago. money adds up when your un-employed (interview tomorrow though so fingers crossed)

i might have a guarantee with them actually, will phone up the place and check

First disconnect the handbrake cable, then wind the piston in clockwise. Early calipers had an allen key fitting, later ones need a special tool.
