mk 2 golf gti G60 conversion

hi all, i currently have a '90 spec golf gti 8v but have the opportunity to buy a complete Corrado G60 engine, STG 4 charger, ecu and wiring loom etc etc

I am thinking of running the G60 engine in my golf and am basically wondering how difficult it is likely to be to fit? I believe the ECU should just plug into the rest of the golfs loom; i will only have the ECU and engine bay wiring available from the G60

Also i will have to run the STD gearbox from my golf, is there likely to be any problems with this? I think the ratios are closer than the G60 box - is this correct?

Finally, does anyone know where i can find a tuning guide for the G60 engine and what bhp/torque figures it is capable of with tuning?

Hi Rich.
Wiring should not be a problem as your car should be central electric. Your gear box will work, ratios will be a bit close for a G60 engine. Clutch should hold if you use a 16v pressure plate, will start to slip if you tune the engine. This is a doable project and will be a lot of fun when its is running ;D.

alrite mate,

you would have to extend the loom matey, cos the ecu in the corrado is in a diffrent place to the 8v digi, make sur you do a good job of this bit, because it is often overlooked by others, definately the most important thing to get right.
i would uprate the gearbox if i were you mate, i doubt that standerd gearbox would appreciate the extra 90-100hp running it :D

top end g60 engine should produce 230 bhp without causing u to many problems ;)

good luck with it mate, this conversion aint for the faint hearted :D

pics and reports of progress would be nice ;)

so you think my gearbox will need uprating? is this gonna be essential or just if i really uprate the HP as i was really hoping to do the conversion on a budget!

With the extending of the loom, im guessing this is just a case of grafting in wire so the ecu can be placed in its right place, where is the ECU placed on the mk2 golf by the way? i noticed the corrado one is at the back of the engine bay.

Do you think this is going to be a really difficult conversion - any big problems? i was hoping itd just along the lines of both engines out, swap gearbox + new clutch, fit new engine onto existing mounts, wire in the new ecu then go!! with a few headaches imbetween of course!

I am using a 8 valve 020 gearbox and 16v pressure plate with my turbo setup. I am making over 220hp and it will do the 1/4 in under 14 seconds, gearbox is holding up fine. Even 02a g/boxes go wrong, get the engine in and running and enjoy it. If the gearbox grenades, easy to find another or do the work and fit the 02a. (just my 2p worth)

never doen one,

but i enquired bout getting it done
its supposed to be hard >:(
and to get it done properly (which you will want of course ;)) go to a pro

midland vw are good, they charge about 2k, engine included :)

hello mate.

if the g60 is standard, you should get about 160bhp from it. put a smaller pulley in and chip it andf you'll bring it up to aboput 190 (depending on size of pulley) the next option would be to rebuild and port the charger (stage four rebuild would take it to around the 200bhp mark)

If you're down south, it's worth putting in a call to pitstop developments and talking through your project with you. they might be able to help.

Sounds like there may a few tricky bits to the conversion but generally its straight forward, i work at a big name renault tuning company so any problems i have should be ok as i know some very qualified mechanics!
I understand the comments about doing it properly, nice to have it looking factory standard!
The engine does have a recently (14,000 miles ago) rebuilt stage 4 jabbasport charger on it, thats what attracted me to the engine and it should be good for the magic 200 bhp figure!?

About the gearbox, i appoligise about my lack of knowledge on this but what is the difference between the 020 and 020a gearbox and what are the respective models that they are fitted to? i presume my 8v will have the 020?

If it's done 14,000 miles I would check what size the pulley is. Anything smaller than a 68mm i would advise having the charger checked.

Ive found from experence nothing involving modifing a car can be done on a budget, you will always end up over-running so make sure your bank is in order becuase you may find your self using your over draft ;)
