Engine noise on 16v
« on: 08 June 2004, 21:07 »
My 16v is making a noisy metallic sound all the time. It goes sometimes but it is making me nervous. I have had a full service on it 3 months ago and it was fine. I have just put new oil in and the sound is still there.

Any ideas whats happening with my engine?

Likely to be a cam chain, as Steve said  ;)

Have a good look with the bonnet open and engine running. Mine makes a racket aswell but its my damn alternator, makes a horrible whirring sound.

forgive me if this sounds really stupid, but i ran my 16v on unleaded for two years and it used to pink like a bastard. I didn't know what pinking was, so alwasy described it as a metallic noise from the engine....

what petrol you using?

The camchain on my valver started rattling at about 120k and made a hell of a racket. Listen closely to the head at the opposite end to the cambelt. I actually found the noise could be heard better from inside the car with the door and bonnet open, or even better stand a little way from the car and get somebody else to rev it for you and you will clearly hear the rattle over the engine noise. When I took mine to the garage I was happily revving the arse of it to demonstrate the noise to a mechanic, he couldn't hear it but the manager came rushing out of the office saying I must be brave revving it with a rattle like that!!!
Not a mojor job but best to replace your tappets and cambelt at the same time so it can become pricey.

Optimax. What do you think then?

Optimax is wicked mate, stopped the pinking on mine and allowed the timing to be advanced a little...better performance and more economical.

I would definately recommend it if you have a 16v as they weren't designed to run on unleaded. just a shame it's more expensive :-\

Hope this is helpful, I'm sure thewre's a huge thread on here somewhere about optimax :)
