Manifold and Exhaust help needed.

I have a P reg '97 plate 2.0 gti 16v and am looking to replace the manifold back to increase performance and improve looks.
Does a larger manifold actually help that much or is there not much point? am not really tuning it up properly!!
 There are loads of manifolds on ebay and exhausts but don't know if they will all fit together?  I have been a vr6 cat back system but told it wont fit onto the vr6 manifold, but will it fit onto a gti manifold?
there is a manifold that goes 6 - 3 - 1, does this then need a downpipe to the cat?

There are no after market manifolds for a mk3 16v engine, those 6-2-1 manifolds are for vr6's.

Just start off with a good cat-back system and if your brave add a decat which will really make a difference but won't be legal come mot time.

yeah as daz has said, u cnt get aftermarket manifolds for 16v. was tryin 2 get one for my bro-in-laws old 16v, gave up in the end.
