Gearbox codes

On my 'R' Plate 8v GTi, my box is shagged! Engine code is AGG. I don't have a clue what code the box is, but suspect it is CHE. Does anyone know if i'm correct, and where could i find the code? If i'm looking for a replacement can I use any mk3 GTi box? Would I need to change the clutch?.

You need an 020 gearbox fitted to 1.8, 1.9wiesel & 2.0 8v mk3 and some mk2 models (needs a different clutch tho!)
its wise when your changing the box to fit a new clucth as there not the easiest thing to do! (driveshafts bolted on and a weird clutch arrangement!)

codes on the bottom of the box looking up from under the car stamp on a flat section  . you can only fit 8v GTI boxes :embarassed: the 16v is a different box  or you could fit a mk2 GTI box  but check the spline size( number of teeth on the shaft ) mk 3 is 28  and the m2 is 24 so you might have to change the friction plate if the rest of your clutch is ok  plate size is 210mm  check your drive shaft ends on gear box do not leak before fitting  or you in for some fun when you can smell  [/color] burning gear box oil splashing on your hot exhaust or find a recon gearbox shop and get them to fit it looking at £400 to £500 so you dont get the above problems rember you have to take out and refit new one  on driveway or lock up on your own ! your choice have fun
on my 3 fit in 3 months never check clutch for wear  :embarassed: doin it today or monday

Quick note,  the later TDI diesel is a hydro box (like VR6 and valve)  so dont go buying one of them
