im leaking oil out from the where the distributer bolts onto the cylinder head/rocker cover on my 16v. had a look on etka and in haynes and there doesnt seem to be a seal or gasket. is it part of the rocker cover gasket? or is it just sealed metal to metal

There is a 'o' ring on the distributer body, are you sure it is not coming from inside the distributer?.

How can you tell where oil's leaking from, I have a look but it's so filthy you can't see anything, if I clean it up and have a look after the next journey it's all filthy again and I still can't tell where it's coming from.

I've been told that my oil leaks are from the oil breather hose and the valve cover, how easy are these to stop and how do I go about it, my golf's starting to binge on oil so I want to get these leaks resolved asap.

Take the dizzy cap off, if the oil is leaking through then the internal seal has failed.
