I would guess the engine losses from driving your power steering pump would be negligible.

Have you had a go in a non-PAS model??  Completely personnal opinion, but I prefer the feel of the PAS models.

1 HP ish when pump fully loaded,  alternator is the big drag on the belt

the good thing withthe pas rack is that it's shorter than the manual one,  i plan to loose the pas pump on mine  but replaceing it with an electric pump,  that only runs when required. keep short rack , power steering and more efficent
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

hmm interesting <strokes chin>  corsa setup or similar I assume?  I've not had the pleasure(?) of a pas failure at speed but when you're going slow its very heavy!
I converted my 8v to pas with a 16v rack, to me it felt exactly the same when driving, you only notice the pas when you're driving at low speeds/parking :)
'they' say the 16v/g60 rack is quicker than a normal 8v pas rack, etos certainly has a different part number but thats the only 'proof' I have.

You would have to be mad to remove the pas. There won't be any noticeable increase in performance, and you'll end up wrestling the car. The car will be a pig to park lol, and you will feel the lack of pas at speed, especially when driven at pace.

The most noticeable place you'll see an issue is on long fast but sharp corners where an upchange is required, eg A3 coming through Hook and heading towards the Esher exit. As you leave the 50 zone and enter NSL you can start to accelerate hard and the corner is quite hard itself. In a non pas car you really do have to keep a firm grip when you make the up change, and thats if you make the upchange. In a pas car you don't have to hang on quite so hard.

With non pas you just don't have the confidence to throw the car round so much. If I could be inclined to get it on my 16v, I would without a doubt.

that might be an issue if you have arms like twigs

imo power steering is better purely because the rack is shorter, so is helpful when you have to correct the car for example
