Head gasket or summat else?
« on: 28 May 2004, 09:56 »
I'm appealing for help. 8valve 1.8 kjet that's a bit poorly. I've noticed recently it's been losing a bit of water - not alot, just about 100ml every time i go for a run. Anyway, thought I found a leak under the part where all the hoses join together and go into the head - all 3 leaking! Relaxed a bit and thought I'd fix at the weekend. Drove the car to work yesterday and it starts spitting out grey smoke when it's reached operating temp - oil @ 94 degrees. It also sounds like it's running on 3 cylinders. Spent all day in a strop , drove home and it did the same thing - fine initially and then smokey and running rough when up to temp. The coolant hoses felt pretty rigid and the cap was hissing slightly, but not too badly. Popped the plugs - 2,3,4 were nice and brownish, - 1 was noticably damp, but I'm not sure what with - fuel or coolant. Started the car and waited to see if the hoses went rigid quickly, but it was idling for a minute or so and they weren't that hard.  ???
ANYBODY GOT ANY IDEAS whats going on? The obvious thing is the head gasket, but are there any other alternatives to what it might be? Might buy a compression tester - would that tell me without doubt what's wrong? I'm just wondering if an injector could become leaky at a certain temperature, flood the cylinder and cause the fuel to be dumped out the back end - hence grey, not white smoke?
Cheers in advance.
By the way, what sort of job is a DIY head pull?, and what sort of price should I pay for some1 else to do it - inc skim?

Hi,
I'm no mechanic but is sounds like the head gasket, you getting any mayonaise type stuff in your oil? or any oil in your exspansion tank?
You anywhere near leicester? i'v got a compression tester.

Cheers for the offer matt. Leicester is a bit of a run as I live in Shropshire - don't think the car would make it! No mayonnaise - well a little bit when the car is hot and I take the filler off straight away, but it then "dissolves". Anyone done any head work themselves?

Sounds like the headgasket is leaking, pressurising the coolant.
Compression test does not always detect this, if it is a small leak.
The best test is to get a garage to test the coolant expansion tank for exhaust gases.

if you aint cooked it (over heated) the engine it aint much assel just to change the head gasket, remove the head and clean up block and head sufaces then fit ne one , (along with new timing blt and TENSIONER) then  you should have years of trouble free running, sounds like youve caught this early, dont fret youll be ok!!

Thanks for the replies guys. Had quite a few people say that it's not as scarey a job as all that. It's definately the head gasket - bought a compression tester which showed up the same warm compression on all cylinders - 170 psi - is that good? It's on the upper range of the green part of the tester, which either shows there's fluid in the cylinders, or good compression + hence good rings?? Whilst doing this test, it noticed the sun shining in number one plug hole and it looked pretty damp in there, so I got one of those plant sprayer things with the squeezer on, put the plastic pipe end in the cylinder and sucked out what was inside - hey presto, lots of coolant! I sprayed some on a match, just to make sure it wasn't petrol and it put the match out, so I think that's pretty certain it's a leak! Anyway, I've started to strip down the engine - coolant drained, hoses removed etc. I'm a bit stuck on the crank pulley though - won't shift.. any ideas? Looks like there's some M8 bolt holes which may well be to screw bolts in and push against the block?
What's worrying me more is whether to take off the head with manifolds off, or on - I've got some funny looking spring clips holding the down pipe to the exhaust manifold, and the haynes manual says I need a special tool, but they managed with a screwdriver which isn't recommended. Anyone done these clips b4?
This is turning into an essay. I'm off for a bevvy.  ::)

Crank pulley is held on with 4 allen key bolts, once removed tap pulley with a hammer till it comes free.
As for the spring clips, there are tools available to remove/refit them, might be worth investing in one.
