brake hard pipes
« on: 05 October 2008, 22:47 »
Hey folks,

yet another problem with my mkII 8v GTi. Put it in for a M.O.T. it done not too bad and only failed on a couple of things. It's just what it failed on that worries me! The flexi brake hoses that come off the brake compensator are corroded at the fittings. so i tried to replace them and ended up snapping the hard pipe that they connect to! This is the hard pipe that goes to the rear caliper flexi hoses. So, the question is. Can you buy these as a replacement part or do you have to make them up? As i only have a VERY basic mechanical skill this would be a job for a garage but i'm trying to keep spending to a minimum.

Cheers

This always happens when you try to replace flexi pipes, the rigid pipes are siezed on. Soaking them with penetrating oil before you started might have helped! Any garage (or motor factor, sometimes) will make up pipes to fit. They need to know the length and end fittings, take the old ones in as a pattern. Have fun bleeding the rear calipers! Always tricky....pull the compensator round to the position it would be in if the car were heavily loaded and fix it there, this will allow a better fluid flow to the rear and ease the bleeding process.

cheers for the reply mucker.

Not too worried about bleeding the rear calipers. Had to do it when i changed them last week, i just jammed the compensator valve open.

So that's what i'll do then with the hard pipes, hopefully it doesn't cost too much! lol

cheers

cheers,

i gave my local garage a call and they said to bring the pipe in and they'd make a new one up, so i think i'm going to go down that route.

Got to say, this is one of the best forums for advice and help. No question!

massive length of copper is about £6 the ends are pence, then you remove the old pipe and cut the new pipe to the approx length. the only problem you got it is you dont have a tool to flare the ends. brake pipes are actually really really easy to do... its just having that flaring tool.

once its approx lenght and has the ends on, you bend it into the shape of the old one, then fit.
