New exhaust. Advice needed.
« on: 26 September 2008, 18:24 »
Been an expensive start to the pay month this month .  Just had 4 new tyres and tracking  sorted and while the thing was up on the ramps i was shown that my exhaust is on its last legs.  I kinda suspected this anyway and was looking to get a performance exhaust , but may need to bring that investment forward slightly.

Basically just looking  for advice on a couple of things. Firstly peoples own experiences and which exhaust they has found worked best for them on a 8v gti, and secondly, if anyone knows anywhere in the Southampton, Portsmouth, Hampshire area that will do the work at a reasonable price.  Would like to do it myself, however lack of time and in the process of moving out, along with not having the means to jack the entire car up to do the work and pretty much no experience is forcing the issue slightly.

cheers

So, speaking  to a mate.  He said that unless i'm gonna completely upgrade the system from back box through to manifold then its not really worth shelling  out for just the middle and back box.  He suggested going  for a standard middle box and then just a performance backbox as any performance gain from the middle would be totally minimal.

just wondering if anyone else agrees/disagrees with this?

Well.. I've had other cars with just back boxes and tbh i dont really rate them. My gti is the first car ive had a full system on, its cat-back and love it, quite loud but not too loud. And just feels so much smoother to drive.

I'd say look at getting a 2nd hand full system on there? obviously depends on your budget but there really not that tricky to fit either with a bit of common sence im sure you could manage it

I'd go with that to a degree, manifold back is a bit keen 'cos you've still got a Cat in the way.

A full Cat back system would 'breathe' better - true, but big dollars for a good system

Just a back box - well not gonna see huge BHP gains, usually a back box is the most restrictive part of a system so benefits are gained as too are a deep burble from a good brand, rather than a Jap style rasp of budget boxes.

If dosh is tight I'd hunt the trusty eBay for a 2nd hand system or rear box.

If you end up with just a rear box maybe try someone like GSF carparts for a middle section.

Bear in mind tho to budget for fitting, a local garage would doing for a few quid

do you need a full system? which bit is iffy?  :undecided:

New mid and back boxes needed, its looking a bit corroded under there at the minute :undecided:.

Budget isn't too much of an issue.  Cheap is good, but i don't mind spending a bit of money if it means adding a little something to the car .

A few extra BHP squeezed out of the  thing would be nice, but i realise the best way to achieve this is to chuck in a 1.8t engine or to go and buy a 16v or VR6 .  The latter is something i am considering  if the right car becomes available, so again with the pricing, not looking to spend huge amounts to get the best exhaust on the market.

cheers

Theres lots of choice on cat back systems out there....depends how much you want to spend? I like jetex for good fitment and quality and they do mild steel performance systems too (a bit cheaper than a full s/s) and an added bonus... it will fit most 16v/vr models with a simple adaptor pipe avalible from slow fit etc

Go for a jetex cat back system.
I had it on the vr, not loud at all, just a slight growl, good for performance too.
I think the system is about £300??
