airbox drilling - detrimental?

i was thinking about drilling the airbox on my mk2 1.6 driver purely for the sound, but seen as it is a non-injection model i was wondering if drilling it would make the car run extremely lean or would cause any other bad side effects?

i cut a square out of my airbox nd cant say i have had any problems with it. There was a longet thread somewhere else on here about it. TBH i dont think it makes any difference to you car apart from maybe a better sound.
