Tuning differences DSG v Manual
« on: 14 October 2008, 13:50 »
I have heard that it is harder to tune a DSG over a manual is this correct? I have heard great things about the DSG set up buthave heard that you ar erestricted with it when it comes to tuning and modding.

Can you shed some light on this please, trying to decide whether to get a manual or DSG :undecided:

You can tune the DSG version up to about 315BHP before you start getting any problems. After that you are starting to look at clutch slip.
If you are going standard GTI then you would need serious mods to reach clutch slip figures, But if you go ED 30 then it is well with in the realms of possibility.  :smug:

....

Obbzi, you'll find that the well established tuners take DSG into account. It's not more difficult but more the importance of limiting the maximum torque which the DSG box of tricks has to handle. This is done as a protective measure - Afterall, any tuner who ignored this and it consequently resulted in expensively broken DSG boxes, would very quickly be avoided and would find it difficult to stay in business.

I guess that if your quest is maximum power, then you might choose a Manual transmission but personally I think that driveability and reliability is more important. The Ed30 obviously has more potential for maximum tuning but uses the same DSG box (unless T_T corrects me!). The GTI/Ed30 is also a FWD (obvious statement of the month!!) and balance should also be a consideration. At least, that's my opinion.

The unwritten rule seems to be a safe max torque of about 300 ft lb / 400 Nm for DSG. It'll doubtless take more but the more you push the envelope the more risk of problems.

Look at my mods in my sig and you'll see it is possible to tune a DSG. I've had some problems with clutch slip, but at the moment all is well *touch wood*

pleanty of guys in the states pushing a lot more than 300 through DSG so don't worry; DSG isn't an issue if the tuning company you use know what they're doing!

take for example vtech abuser 300+ no mods to the box and still uses it daily and gets impressive quater times :)

Correct me if I'm wrong but Vtech abuser also has a TBE.

Currently in discussions with a dutch company about uprated DSG clutches, at a more realistic price than HGP were planning. More info as I get it..

....Sorry, Carl but although I have much faith in Revo knowing what they are doing, I'm not convinced by "plenty of guys in the states"! IIRC it was Revo, or one of their agents, who told originally me that around 300 ft lb was a sensible DSG torque limit without further more internal mods. I prefer to go for maintaining some headroom and longevity.
