Insurance & SORN notice
« on: 16 September 2008, 19:15 »
Ok, so Im in a real financial mess at the moment and can't afford to run my car for the next month or so. I cant afford the insurance, tax or MOT until I get some cash coming in at the end of October so Im having to declare it as off the road and Ive got a couple of questions.

Im due my first 1 years NCB since buying my car last November, if I declare my car as off the road - what will happen to my NCB?

I have 1 payment left before my insurance is due for renewal but the whole point of me declaring my car as off the road is because I cant afford it, the insurance being one thing. Will they charge a penalty or anything?

Your problem is..if you dont have the insurance for the whole 12 months they wont give you your n.c.b!! So i would ensure you make that last payment!! (I know some places can change a policy so you keep earning your n.c.b without a car on the policy but they will possibly ask for an admin fee to ammend it!! normally around £30!)

I guess Ill have to ring and ask. A £30 admin fee is better than paying £147.

My insurance company are b*stards When I past my test, my premium doubled from £67 a month to nearly £150. I found another insurer though who have quoted me £66 a month with a £66 deposit - but that's only with my 1 year NCB, without it, it's £103 so I really need to keep my NCB otherwise I'm not much better off.

Everything has come at the wrong time, got a parking fine which needs to be paid, got pulled over by the police the other night and fined another £60 because my MOT has run out. In a right mess at the moment! :(

Yo'll prabs have to pay the last payment to get the NCB. Seems like you need to organise yourself better mate, get a calender and write when everythings due for renewal! Like MOT TAX and so on.

Some insurers don't like doing Laid up cover so you'd best ask first and also find out about the NCB whilst you're at it. You may find you can get Laid Up Fire & Theft cover for about £100 P.A provided you've held the policy for a while (i.e more than 6 months). It all depends on each specific insurer's terms and conditions - you might get lucky! If you cancel the policy you will have no luck with NCD at all, unless you are in the last month, then again, depending on the insurer you may be ok.

Keeping schtum. Mostly.

Your no claims last for 2 years thats what Sainsbur's said when I asked them because I had 4 years ncb with Direct line. Also protected my no claims on the Golf for an extra £120.

From past experience, if you miss the payment your policy will still run for about a month n half before they ACTUALLY suspend the policy, so miss the payment, when they send you a demand next month pay it and all will be fine, tell them your DirectDebit got cancelled and that your working on getting it resolved but your away on work and nowhere near the car or your documents for the next few weeks, Tell them anything really to stall them!

On another note, Your company isnt LEGALY allowed to keep your wages away from you! Demand your wages for the month in full and they are required by LAW to give it! Unless of course you've done something to loose them money then your pretty much screwed.
