How to replace vacuum hose (TB-ECU) pic inside
« on: 15 September 2008, 21:27 »
What does it do, and how do you go about replacing it?  It seems to be some sort of breather, but seems to go right through the bulkhead?  It also seems to be covered in a kind of a mesh/gauze?

One pic shows the pipe better, the other shows where it's connected (and it also seems to be broken right at the joint)..  I was thinking some sort of vacuum hose, pull one end off and join it, but want to see if anyone's got any experience of it?

*edit - searching after Paul's post for vacuum hose, I've found what it is, what it does - all I need now is if anyone knows how to replace it?

Its the vacuum hose that goes to the ecu, which is located under the plastic cover at the bottom of the windscreen.

Cool, and any ideas how to remove it from the pictured end without doing more damage?  Is it repairable (rather than replaceable)?

It should just pull off.
It is only a plastic pipe with a woven protective covering.
If the split is near the end, just trim and re-attach.
Might be better to replace with new silicon vacuum pipe. Replace the other vacuum pipes whilst your at it.

I have read that the length of the vacuum pipe to the ecu is critical due to it measuring pulses. Not sure about this and perhaps someone else can advise - I didn't measure mime to make sure it was the same length and my car runs fine.

That is your map sensor hose, car will run like sh*t if it is broke. You could simply cut off the broken bit and reconnect. Otherwise replace by taking off the rubber seal at tha scuttle panel. Then lift the scuttle panel and remove  hose from ecu, then pull old hose out, it should go through a rubber gromet at the back off the engine bay. You the simply feed a new hose back through.
Hope that makes sense.

All makes sense guys, thanks very much.  If it all just pulls off, I'll be a bit more forceful!  It seemed a bit weak to start pulling at it, didn't want to damage anything else!

I put a little tape around the area I think is split, and it runs a lot better.  A replacement pipe will be just the job I reckon.  Can't snip and re-attach, the pipe is already stretched (suggesting it's already been messed with..), and I think I made it worse lowering the engine to get the gearbox out.

Get some 3mm i.d silicone vac hose from ebay, got mine from a seller called zenna racing, about 2m should do it. You can use the extra to replace the other vac hoses.

On order mate, ordered 3m of black samco to give me a little spare!  The one at the front looks a bit worn too.
