Re-spray Bonnet MK2
« on: 17 September 2008, 20:41 »
I have a small area on my bonnet where the paint has chipped away. I am really considering getting it re-sprayed.

I have been quoted 160 pounds just for the bonnet in same color (dark metallic blue). Is this a cheap price?? If not do any of you guys know a cheap and good re-sprayer around Somerset?

Also, if I am going to get the bonnet re-sprayed would it be worthwhile getting any other parts of the car re-sprayed? Would it be worthwhile getting the whole car re-sprayed. Would this increase the value of the car?

Note: car is VW Golf GTI MK2 8V 89' - Dark Blue Metallic Blue with 137k miles

Would really appreciate your replies.

spending money on a car will always increase its value, but remember, spend £1000 on it and it will add maybe £200 or so if your lucky. Dont expect to put a £1500 paint job and get it back when you sell it. £160 sounds reasonable for a bonnet to me.

If I did get the bonnet re-sprayed, even if I got the right color, would it match the color of the wings?

Also, do you guys think maybe it would be better to just get the paint in a tin and just try a repair job myself, or would it be impossible to make it look good?

The colour will be a slightly diffrent shade due to age and the light angle. Even colour match specialists wont get it spot on.

You will be ok with just the bonnet but if you get the wings done...they wont match with your doors.

£160 is about right for a good job

So when you say it won't look exactly the same. Will a bonnet re-spray be worth it over doing a botched self repair job? I can get a tin of the same paint and paint over the area, but would that look really obvious?

sorry mate didnt mean to put you off. im just being picky

Leave it to the pro's. You can just tell old from new paint but if you just paint the bonnet its less noticable.
Its just a fraction of a shade lighter or darker

dont DIY it if you dont have the knowledge

£160 is about right, usually £100 for every panel and £150 for the bonnet

If you get the bonnet  painted, ask for the wing tops to be  blended, and then lacquered down to the swage line just above the wheel arch, this will not affect the colour of the wing to the door, this is about 6hrs work, and around £80 in materials... if you can get it done for under £250 snap there hand off!
