Mk5 Head unit replacement adapter
« on: 15 September 2008, 11:53 »
Hi,

Has any ones got any pics they can post of the single Din head unit installed? I seen a pic of one and wasnt sure about it.  Im considering changing the standard head unit in favour or an Alpine unit possibly.

Cheers
Damo

Do you want a pic of the actual double DIN to single DIN adaptor which fits in the dash?

Or are you after pix of specific single DIN head units?

Iv replaced mine with a single din Alpine HU (not really for aesthetics but to allow me to wire up my sub and amp). At work at the moment but will post one up when I get home.

If you are thinking of swapping let me know as its not as simple as swapping it out. You loose some functions such as the radio turning on and off when turn the key (this can still be done by taking a wire from the fuse board but I didn't do it as I wanted to be able to use the HU when the keys weren't in plus I couldn't really be bothered with taking the car apart again) and auto dimming when you turn your lights on as this is all done via the CANBUS system. I was quoted £110 for CANBUS converter which imo is day light robbery (you can get the for cheaper but they are by no means "cheap". The simple converter that I got cost me £10.

Even without my sub and amp wired up simply changing the HU alone was a great improvement on sound, bass etc.

Like Alan says without the CAN BUS adaptor you will lose certain features or have to run extra wires.

Here's an CAN BUS adapter I have used before and worked well (@ £50 ) http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/8115.html
