How to identify my springs and shocks?
« on: 31 August 2008, 15:29 »
Hi, my golf has been lowered by a previous owner 40mm by the looks of it. however, ive inspected the shocks and springs but cant see a make on them. the springs are red, and thats all i can see. any ideas how to identify them? will the springs actually look different?

Good luck

some springs will have the manufactures name / brand printed on them and sometimes a serial number as well.  but a lot of cheaper springs don't also it has a habit of coming off even if it was on there,  the springs volksbits used to sell were red along with there dampers.  would proably have to take the springs off to find and stamp or PN
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

ah cheers for that. Im not impressed with the handling of my valver, when you give it some stick round roundabouts and corners it doesent feel very solid and almost slides, instead of getting the expected understeer from a front wheel drive car. i suspect that they are cheap springs, but obviously i dont want to fork out for decent springs and find that nothing much has improved. Il stick with these for the mean time and wait till a set of eibach springs and boge dampers are for sale cheap somewhere.
I had a mini before, and id expect my golf to handle better than that.

Cheers for the help!

Mine handles pretty poorly as well. Can the springs be adjusted to raise the car at all ?

no you need new springs unless you have coilovers, which are height adjustable.
