16v Warm Start Problem

I seem to have got a intermittent starting issue. It only happens after a reasonable length drive when the car is fully warm. Then if you stop and turn engine off you cant restart for about 10-15 mins.

It runs fuel pump and all other in car electrics work but it wont turn the starter motor.?

I am guessing that it has something to do with the temperature and maybe there is a cutout that after a drive when you stop the oil/water temp goes up higher and then you cant start until it drops.

Any views would be welcome?


Just to spark your imaginations, i also have an unused immob and alarm that was after market fitted by first owner 20 something years ago. Also i had a near miss with an incorrect light switch which roasted the wire sheathing but all was still working fine.

The ignition switch could be faulty. They get hot and can fail as it had done on my Mk2 and Mk3 now with exactly the same symptoms you described.

mmm good thought...ignition switch the bit that the barrel connects to rather than the actual barrel where the key goes..? time to get the haynes out..

I did the ignition switch on mine.  Its a pig of a job as you either have to take the steering column out (and then its very difficult to get the column back in the universal joint), or you have to remove the steering wheel hub adapter (on late model Mk2's anyway) with pullers.

This is all because there is a tiny screw behind the ignition switch housing that is very tought to get to without decent access.

Its about £10 but as Conker said, its a pain to change. Theres a sleeve on the column that you have to get off with a puller and molegrips, once its off, its a straight forward job

Good post matey mine does the same thing! even after like a 5 or 10 minute drive it struggles to restart until it gets semi cold!?
I'm guessing the starter motor has anyone else got any ideas?

Cheers Leon R, Yes that pic looks little like i am about to buy though without the black outer. for about 6 quid you can get the white plastic bit inside.

I think i saw a pic of the sleeve to buy separately. Cheers for the advice conker i will give myself enough time when i do attempt it. Does this steering wheel hub adaptor exist on pre 88 models?

By puller are we talking about an actual special part or just bent bits of metal or the like?

Yes gtijoey, even after 10 minutes it can take another 10 minutes to start again. But i am thinking it is as these guys have been saying the ignition switch. Will replace mine and report back asap.

Bungy, the puller looked a bit like this (except mine i borrowed from work, incase it broke...)

And i got a pair of molegrips just at the bottom of the sleeve and attached the legs of the puller to the molegrips. You keep tightening till it comes off or slips off 

You can buy a new sleeve because what happens is that the bottom of the sleeve gets molegrip jaw marks which i easily grinded down and used it again because i'm cheap

cheers bungy, mine does try i think it turns the engine over about half a turn then just stops but when its cold it seems to free up? mines havin a new sill at the moment so its not going anywhere for a while lol.
