Loads of 16v questions
« on: 08 May 2004, 18:42 »
Sorry if this is too much in one go, but here it is :

(1) My fan is making the most annoying sound on earth (actually both of my mk2's do this) What is the part that needs replacing ? The motor I presume ??

(2) My electric windows wind down with purpose but wind up as sllllooooowww as is possible (they need a bit of a hand on the passenger side) - what is the likely cause of this ? Motor or window internals ?

(3) The glass on my dash is very badly scratched and I'd like to replace it - can I get the glass on it's own or do I need to buy the whole speedo/tacho combo ?

(4) The contact on my horn is missing completely (??) - I have some wiring and one plate on the detachable bit - but no plate on the wheel itself - Assuming I replace the wheel with a aftermarket one, would I get all the necessary bits with a wheel and boss (or would I need the contact plate - I'm guessing not)

(5) My indicator switch does not self correct - is there a simple fix for this or am I likely to need a replacement ?

(6) Could someone post some links to pics of mk2 valvers on standard suspension and on lowered - the reason being is that my suspension is rough and bumpy (makes my CD's skip on minor pot-holes!) and I hope that it's just age of the bits - and not that it's been lowered.

(7) For a nice smooth daily drive ride on a big bumper 16v running factory bbs 15" rims, what would be a good lowered suspension kit ?

(8) Similarly what would be a good strut brace (at a reasonable cost) - I think I have a KR engine ?

(9) Ok - there's a theme here - what about brake upgrades ??

(10) How good/bad are the stereo door pockets that GPC sell ?

(11) What size are the speakers in the dash (as standard) ?

That'll do for the minute - apologises for being a noob with a hundred questions (well eleven) !!

I think uprated bumpstops help with the CD skipping problem.

You could take apart a diffrent speedo and replace the glass maybe?

Change the fan motor for a new one :) or try your luck with a bit of WD40 :D
Ive been told that the bearings in the motor get worn and do this.

electric window problem. Try changing the drive side switch for the passenger side and see if it works diffrently. could be the switches?

I think GPC sell the genuine door pockets ;)

I came across this on a 'rival' site for suspension :

Sachs Boge Turbo Gas shocks (about ?30-35 each)
with Eibach Springs (?110)
New Front Topmounts (G60/mk3 ones) (?10-?13 each)
New Spring Caps (?4-5)
New Bump Stops (?20 for set of 4)

Does this sound about right and if so where would I get these from and would they be lowered items ?

Thanks Blue - as far as my windows go they both seem to have the 'juice' in them to wind down and slowly up - sometimes the passenger side will wind up unaided but at 0 mph !

As far as the door pockets go - I was wondering if they were a bit rattly (the material doesnt look all that noise/vibration friendly!)

Boge turbo gas are sh!t.
Eibach springs are the bollox.
Always by top mounts from VW, mk2 ones will be fine.

try this for standard mk2 suspension setup...

http://www.awesomegti.com/

go to 'Virtual gallery'

then 'mk2 golf suspension garage'

ohh and the speakers in the dash are tweeters and these fit straight in....

indicators - ? there is a little plastic lip on OE wheels that cancel the indicator, either that or the cancel bit on the stalk is broke off

Speedo glass/plastic - this is bonded on - easier to get a replacement set of clocks and put them in (you can set the mileage by putting a drill in the back of them)

electric windows - take of the door card and spray WD40 into the motor where the cables go into it. spray the window channels with rubber lubricant.

i run Eibach springs & anti-roll bars - handling is immense and comfort levels are not compromised, more comfortable than std suspension

have a look in the gallery, although the car it aint level - that was it when it was on std suspension, not its only 25mm lower so not much difference to the eye, but alot different in feel/handling

dash speakers are tweeters, i.e. they just pump out treble and no bass
