Passat 20VT in a MK3
« on: 30 August 2008, 23:56 »

Can you fit a 1.8T 20V from a 1997 passat into a MK3 Golf??!?!?

Cause if you can .............

As it is a passat and not a mk4 golf, the parts are slightly different and not sure if the gearbox, etc will fit properly.

But it should be OK, right? I mean most of the VW engines are similar - i mean if they make a 1.8T 20V, it should be a similar engine in all the different cars, golf, passat, whatever.

Cheers,

Alex.

engine is the same as any other 20vt, but you need the 16v /vr6 gear box clutch, pedal box, gear stick,, then you need the full engine loom, ecu and clocks...plus a few other odds and sods, including the uprated brakes

deffo do'able

was looking at old passats with the 20vt engine, v cheap. would just buy a passat and then a mk3 without engine/box, basically a shell and take all the bits like you said from the passat.

So the 20vt from a passat should be the same as a mk4 20vt? if so it should ok to do, as you see 20vt conversions a lot these days.

yeah just saw pics of the passat engine and it fits in sideways.

Can you not just make new engine mounts and out it in sideways or will it not fit into a mk3 that way?

Might be better looking for a 20vt from a mk4 golf, maybe find one that is written off.

best bet is to find a rear ended mk4 turbo. And use that as your base. Then when done, break the mk4 parts left over. So you wil get some money back on the conversion!!
