With the rear pads the calipers have to be rotated as well as pushed.

yeah if you use a g clamp on the rears it will trash the handbrake mechanism

That's before I get to the allen key bolts that look like they've never been touched. Gonna take a lot of swearing to them feckers off!

i just changed my pads and discs all round and with no probs all i used was a plactic g clamp from a builders shop with a pice of bar spred over the pistons and made sure that the fluid cap was off and they went on easy with no probs the only thing i had troble with was the caliper frame bolts ( frame that holds the caliper on )lol because they had rusted and needed to be cut off got new bolts and all working it was on a 89 mk2 gti 16v so dont no if thats any different
