Oil breather pod on crank case

What is the purpose of the pod thing on the oil breather on top of the crank case, the reason i ask is that mine won't go into the crank case properly, looks like i need a new grommit on it.
in the mean time, can i just bi-pass the pod and insert the pipe directly into the crank case to allow the gases to return?

Nope there's a pressure differential, if you take the pod out your car won't idle and it'll backfire like the antilag on a rally car. pods and connection hoses are dirt cheap from gsf.

you might like the "popping" you get from having a dodgy gromit... i did 

however as stated above, best to get it sorted otherwise your idle will be pants, and fuel usage might also be a bit off.

Yeah - cheers for the advice guys, the seal was horrible and the car idled horribly and did pop - which was quite nice 
Went to GSF and got the part and it runs lovely now - woohoo

I found my grommet to be split a while back, so i took the following steps:

1. Remove the flying saucer, grommet and pipe.
2. Buy 50p rubber bung from Jonny Junks.
3. Use bung to plug up hole at throttle body.

Ran the car like this with the empty hole in the rocker cover for a couple of weeks, and it idled smoother an ran sweeter than it ever had (bung stopped vacuum leaks, see?).  Then on one hot day after crawling home in traffic I opened the bonnet and could actually see the oil fumes spreading about the engine bay.   

At this point I decided to buy a new grommet and put the whole lot back on, rather than allow my engine to set itself on fire!
