Reassurance please
« on: 25 April 2004, 20:45 »
On Tuesday, 27 April I pick up my new car - a one year old  5 dr, Golf 1.8T GTi with 10000 mls on the clock, one previous owner ( the VW garage/dealer director's wife apparently) and a factory fitted sun roof.
It's my third Golf GTI;  and I'm trading in my old 'J reg'  MK 2 GTI (128000 mls) (which I've had for almost eight years now) for which the VW dealer gave me ?700 allowance against my new one.

Basically, I really enjoyed driving my Mk 2's but not really into tweaking big time or considered joining clubs etc. and, to be honest, was seriously considering not buying a VW as was getting a little 'p...sed  off' with VW dealers attitude - post test driving the new Mark V.

Test drove the Mk4 1.8t by chance the other day and 3 hours later I'd bought it!

Panicked.....and decided to do some research (after the purchase!) and discover the GolfGTI site. Found it extremely ueseful but do now need some reassurance as I'm having a few doubts about whether I've made the right decision - especially after reading about dropping windows, dodgy rear wash, coils burning out, etc.

So, somebody out there,  please tell me I've made the right decision.

Heard somewhere else (but can't recall where) that it's advisable to get some headlight protectors? fitted as headlights are very expensive to replace.

Any views on this, cost and where to acquire?
Any other general or specific advice also greatly appreciated.

Na zdrowie!

 ??? ;D ;D

Congratulations on the new purchase, and I am sure you will have very few problems with it. I know a few people on here have said they have niggles with their cars, but as a general rule the VW is a solid car and should provide you with as many years of trouble free motoring as your mk2 did.
As the car is a year old, hopefully any teething problems that new cars have, would have been ironed out, especially if the owner history of the car is as you think. Also it should still have some warranty left to cover it also.
If you really want to delve deeper into the VW scene, I suggest you get yourself along to a local meeting, or a national event and just check out what the whole VW thing is all about.
Its not just a car - its a lifestyle!
All the best

I love my Mk4  ;D

It's a 1.8 (without a turbo), but the same basic engine nevertheless.  Lovely motor.   Had no real problems  :)
