Only had it a week...
« on: 20 April 2004, 13:50 »
Hello

I've had a MkII 16v for about a week now and I've noticed a couple of things that are a bit worrying.
Anyone else had the same?
1st the temperature rises well past the center mark on the gauge before the fan cuts in when the car is idling, the water temp warning light actually flicked on once.
2nd the rear wiper has a mind of its own, it stops and starts from a different position on each sweep and sometimes sticks at 3 o'clock position and wont flap back until i get out and thump it.

Can anybody help?

if your rad fan is a two speed it may only be working on the second setting? ie the first one comes on but doesnt work so the fan doesnt start then when it gets hotter the faster fan speed starts up but this one works so the fan starts!

not sure if this is your problem? just a little thought i had!

Could be the thermostat causing your temp rise. Perhaps sopmeone removed it in the past. As for the temp light. They pretty much have a mind of their own. Mine flicks for the h3ll of it every know and then. doesn't matter where the gauge is at either.

Rear wiper........have you checked the 10mm nut is tight? Sounds like it is loose so the wiper isn't turning with the motor.

That temperature light is actually for measuring the colant level in your expansion tank ... if that get's low it'll start annoying you till u fill it up !

Whilst your looking at the wiper, take off the cover inside the tailgate and check for dirt/rust on the motor and mech, and give everything a going over with the good old WD40 :)

While you're there you could do the good old layflat wiper mod if its your thing...
