I think the 8 Valve is more for people who want the fantastic looks and build quality of a golf, but also want a realy good engine with plenty of poke, of course you get the added bonus of all the GTI gear.
The 16 valve is a bit more of a performance thing, Not only do you get the poke you get a high reving fun enging which is great if you realy like to rag it about from time to time

And then there is th VR6 for pure cruizing pleasuer and mental sound+performance.
Ok they arnt as fast as some engines of the equivelent size, but thats not the point the fact its a golf makes up for all of that. Personaly i have only had a MK2 16V and i loved it! the 8V doesnt have that same fun factor on the track or when your beating about but on road use its still a 2.0L with great bottom end and enough poke to shift you!!... and of course fantastic reliability. Its only when you start driving 1.4 and 1.8 golfs u realise how good the 8V engine is for what it is... as long as you dont compare it to a 2.0L Vtec or something
