gti mk4 125bhp
« on: 08 May 2008, 21:11 »
can someone please help? ive always wanted a gti and finally took the plunge a few weeks ago and bought my first, a 99 gti 1.8 (non-turbo) im happy with everything about it exept a couple of things
1,i expected abit more in the way of performance
2,the responce from the accelerator is shall i say not very responsive?!! it seems slow to pick up
3,i know theres nothing wrong with the engine as its had 1 female owner from new and has a VW FSH and runs sweet as a nut (98,000)

basically i would like some good tuning advice on whats best for that engine??
ie induction kits,exhausts etc
also is is safe to have the engine re-mapped?? id like some extra bhp but not at the cost of any reliablity as i use it every day
any suggestions would be most welcome
thanks in advance

hiya mate, the 1.8  is a good start! and reasonable insurance :)
there not crazy quick as you have found out, but they still a bit quicker than the 2.0litre model.

not sure about a re map, but defo an induction kit, prob a k and n one. and maybe a straight threw exhaust system shoulld free up a few more bhp, might get upto 135 bhp with induction kit and exhaust

some super unleaded wouldnt go a miss, but with these petrol prices dont blame you if you stick with the normal stuff.

good luck with the modding mate !!!

please beware if you put a K&N induction kit on, then be prepared to be cleaning the MAF often. Reason is the filter is covered in a sticky oil which although it stops the dust getting in, the oil itself gets sucked in and messes things up. And you MUST make sure you have GOOD airflow to filter and if possible install a heatsheild between the engine and filter.
Exhausts are good but you would do yourself a favour and try and find a second hand item as new can be quite expensive unless you just get a box from say halfords (but whats the point in that).
Remap should get you say 10bhp and would cost LESS than a decent exhaust.
