Not another ABS question...
« on: 08 May 2008, 00:39 »
Hi guys, wondered if anyone can help me, a friend of mine has what seems to be a faulty ABS control unit. We have aquired a pump and control unit from a car of the same year with the same engine (P reg 2.0 16v). from looking at it i assumed it would be easier to swap the unit with the pump attached rather than just the control unit, what do you guys think??

Ive also been scouring the forums trying to find a solution with regard to bleeding the system if we do change the pump. I have read in some places on the forum you need to use a special setting on VAG COM to do it, ive also read elsewhere that you can do it the old fashioned way as long as you do it with the iginition on. Does anyone know whether i can do it the normal way or do i need VAG COM? as i dont have VAG COM only a spanner, some hose and a willing assistant.

Thanks

Try bleeding it the old fashioned way before replacing the pump. It may not even need replacing. Have you read the fault codes?

yeah its throwing sensor error codes, so we replaced the sensors and after clearing the fault codes they came back. which makes me think its the ABS ECU

No chance, it'll still be the sensors, is it the rears?

If the pump was at fault it would give you a pump fault! Did you use new sensors?

Agreed, did you clean out the connectors before fitting them, check the wires. How long did you drive it for after it came back on?

Have you cleaned up the disc with the holes in that it reads off. they get rusty.

As said, if it throws up sensor fault.... its a faulty sensor

No mate not always, when i had my valver i had no end of abs problems, changed all sensers, cleared all codes but still ended up coming back, ended up taking the car to MidlandVW who swapped the abs pump for a second hand unit which sorted it. Apparently its quite common for the pumps to fail, hope it don't ever happen on my vr, would,nt wanna go through that again.
