Grinding noise from wheel
« on: 27 April 2008, 15:12 »
Hi, i have just bought myself a MK4 GT TDI 150pd.

I have just noticed that when you load the front right handside wheel eg: cornering to the left,  there is a grinding noise.  It almost sounds like the tyre is rubbing the arch but it's deffinetley not that.  I have a few reciepts saying that the drive shaft, cv joint and bearings were all replaced on that side back in november 2007.  Does anyone know what this is likely to be.  Have been told by a mechanic friend that worst case scenario would be the differential, best case scenario is the wheel bearing. I would have thought the diff would make noise turning wither way and would be quite rough in a straight.

Just so everyone knows it has Spax sport suspension kit fitted too

Any ideas before i go handing it to a VW specialist would be appreciated

Thanks very much

Darren,
Essex

My poor car is also suddenly doing it - and worryingly enough, I never had any issues before fitting the new g/box and diff

You can test for wheel bearing by jacking up the offending corner, and check for lateral, vertical and horizontal play in the hub - comparing it to the other side should give you reasonable grounds for what it should be like.

CV joint - if its been replaced, make sure the boot they put on hasn't split. If its split open and grit has got in, it would be a pretty good explaination for the noise. The usual grabbing the driveshaft and giving it a firm wobble may show some signs of wear.

Hi folks,

So it rained really heavy today and the roads were soaked and had alot of water lying on top.  By the time i was driving home from work the noise had gone when i turn left.  Would this suggest the water has got in somewhere and lubricated whatever was grinding?  If so, would you say the CV?

Thanks for any suggestions

Cheers
