Sanded Bumper!
« on: 26 April 2008, 18:17 »
Hi Guys,

I have been looking for a genuine front Big Bumper for what seems like months and managed to picked one up this morning!

The bumper is in good nick, no dents etc But there is one problem, the previous owner had attempted to sand most of it to a smooth finish. This has left light scratch marks all over the plastic part (top textured bit) but some sections which have been sanded look quite smooth!

I have tried using thinner to remove the scratches but this has not made much of a difference.

Any advice? I was thinking of finishing what the guy started with some fine grade sand paper?

Cheers!

you could just buy some texture paint and spray the texture patten back on its avalible in cans.

or just use fine paper and finish it

Cheers Mate,

That looks like an interesting product, not sure how i would get the texture pattern though?

I will pop down B&Q, get some fine paper..

A friend also has a heatgun, worth a shot? Ive read about people getting the black back on grey bumpers using this technique, not so sure about loosing the light scratches?

Cheers!

just sand it smooth and get the scratches out like you would while sanding any other material.

Don't use texture paint - I've had a bit of experience with it and it does produce an interesting finish. But it won't look anything like the original bumper surface.

You'd be better off just working your way through the grades of sandpaper and smoothing it off ... and body colouring it ;)

I'm with Ben on this, I rekon big bumpers are meant to be colour coded with gloss paint.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Cheers Guys,

I definitely agree with NOT going with the colour coded gloss paint!

I just popped down homebase and grabbed fine grade (320) sand paper and some very fine wetordry sandpaper(p600).

You guys reckon its worth putting the heat gun into action once im done witht he sanding? It looks so tempting sitting there

Will post up pictures once Im done sanding, here come the sore arms!

Spent most of the night sanding away!
Doesnt look to bad and im working on it with the fine paper now..

Only problem so far is that although its smoothing up nice, the colour is grey!
I tried linseed oil on a small section and left it over night, still dark

Not sure if this would be good in the long run! I just read your posts and I must have misread, are you saying I SHOULD use gloss paint?

I do not want a shinny finish and hence hesitant with use of gloss paint? Want to keep that OE look??

Look forward to your thoughts!
