This subject was covered here about 18 months ago, but I cant remember in which section, but I can remember saying that a couple of likely scenarios were that the car may have been first registered in Jersey, then imported into the UK, this was all part of a tax fiddle that was pretty much commonplace in the 80s. The other one being that the car was bought and owned by military personnel based more than likely in Germany, then shipped to the UK after there posting came to an end, many cars that made the trip over, remained on German plates for a period of time, (not sure how long) which turned out to be a serious problem! the IRA would target these cars, knowing that the owner/driver was likely to be British forces personnel, and therefore "fair game"
