ED 30 'Diesel Chunter' caused by gearbox?

Just got my Edition 30 back from the dealer to rectify a few warranty issues, one of them was to investigate the 'diesely chunter' on start-up. I don't mean the tappety idle sound but the noise that's like rattly pistons pinking when then the starter motor is released.
Well, I was told that VW had released a technical reprt concerning this and it was blamed on the gears rattling in their gearbox casing when the car was started without the clutch being engaged.
Anyone else heard of this?
